Overwhelmed with work and family responsibilities, we fight exhaustion with shots of caffeine and sugary snacks. To make matters worse, we often remain sedentary throughout the day. No wonder so many of us are physically, emotionally and mentally spent!
The good news is you can ward off fatigue and feel better by doing these six things:
Note that the Mayo Clinic suggests you talk to your doctor before starting an exercise program.
2. Get up and move.
Get up from your desk or workstation throughout the day. Moving all day long will help make away-from-work exercise easier. Use a smartphone or computer app to help remind you to get up and move at regular intervals. Watch our Get Up and Move videos for warm-up and stretching moves.
3. Watch what you eat.
Follow these healthy food dos and don’ts from Healthline for optimal energy:
- Avoid processed foods
- Eat fresh fruits and vegetables
- Avoid caffeine
- Eat lean proteins
- Choose whole grains over sugars and simple starches
- Eat nuts
- Drink water
- Consider taking a daily vitamin.
4. Track your progress and reward yourself.
Try a wearable device such as a FitBit to “gamify” exercise and make it fun. Set healthy rewards for reaching your goals.
5. Give yourself a break when you need one.
Try meditation. It helps balance the body’s systems. Combat the mayhem around you and re-energize naturally by turning on some relaxing music or trying breathing exercises.
6. Connect with coworkers.
Invite them to join you in an afternoon walk or snack. Hold each other accountable for getting up and moving and healthy eating. Enjoy the companionship and feel better. After all, having friendships with coworkers can be good for your health.
